City rules and fees
- Monthly curbside bulk collection of up to 10 cubic yards at no extra charge for homes with City garbage and recycling service. Set out by 7 a.m. Monday of your assigned week. (City of Fort Worth Environmental Services: Bulk Waste Collection)
- Do not put household appliances that contain coolant, gasoline or other chemicals (including air conditioners and refrigerators) in the bulk pile. They are accepted at City Drop-Off Stations. (City of Fort Worth Environmental Services: Bulk Waste Collection)
- Out-of-cycle or non-compliant piles: $123.52 per 5 cubic yards, then $107.40 per 5 cubic yards, up to 30 cubic yards. (City of Fort Worth Environmental Services: Bulk Waste Collection)
- The four Drop-Off Stations take appliances such as refrigerators and air conditioners; the City says Freon does not need to be removed, but food must be. Bring a water bill from the last six months showing sanitation charges and a matching driver's license. (City of Fort Worth Environmental Services: Drop-Off Stations)
Federal refrigerant rule
- The final disposer of an appliance is responsible for making sure any refrigerant in it is recovered. If someone else recovered it first, EPA requires a signed statement with that person's name and address and the date of recovery. EPA says no sticker is required for disposal. (U.S. EPA: Appliance Disposal (Section 608))
Before you haul it
- Empty fridges and freezers completely.
- Check whether the program wants fridge or freezer doors removed, taped shut or left on. Rules differ by city; some reject taped doors.
- Unplug the appliance. On a gas range or dryer, have the gas line shut off and capped by a qualified person before moving it.
- Call ahead: fees and rules change, and the official pages are the final word.
